NBCT Cheat Sheet 2026: One-Page Review of Must-Know Facts

TL;DR
  • Component 1 has about 45 selected-response items (40 scored) plus three separately scored 30-minute written exercises.
  • Certification needs three things: C1 average of at least 1.75, portfolio average of at least 1.75, and a weighted scaled score of at least 110.
  • Component 1 carries 40% of the overall weighted score; selected response is half of it and the three exercises are the other half.
  • Initial Component 1 costs USD 475 plus USD 75 registration; retakes of selected C1 parts cost USD 125 each.

What This Cheat Sheet Covers (and What It Doesn't)

This page condenses the facts that matter for National Board Certification - Early Childhood - Generalist, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) credential for teachers of children ages 3-8, and specifically its Component 1: Content Knowledge assessment. If you need background on the credential itself, start with What Is NBCT Certification? and come back here for the quick-reference version.

One scoping note matters before anything else. Knowledge preparation applies to Component 1 only. Components 2, 3 and 4 are portfolio requirements, each with its own evidence:

  • Component 2, Differentiation in Instruction: student work and analysis.
  • Component 3, Teaching Practice and Learning Environment: teaching videos and commentary.
  • Component 4, Effective and Reflective Practitioner: knowledge of students, assessment and collaboration evidence.

Nothing in this cheat sheet substitutes for the official sample items and rubrics, which control in any disagreement. Treat everything below as independent knowledge preparation, not issuer content, not an official mock exam, and not a measure of classroom competence.

Format and Timing at a Glance

Component 1 pairs two very different kinds of work, and candidates often prepare for only one of them.

ElementDetails
Selected responseApproximately 45 items; 40 scored and five interspersed field-test items
Selected-response time60 minutes
Constructed responseThree exercises, one prompt each, scored separately
Constructed-response timeThree 30-minute written exercises
Total assessed work150 minutes
Appointment lengthAbout three hours, including a 5-minute NDA, 15-minute tutorial and 10-minute break
Arrival30 minutes early
DeliveryPearson Professional Centers (policy names Pearson Professional Assessments; the Candidate Center references Pearson VUE)
Don't confuse appointment time with working time: The three-hour appointment is not three hours of answering questions. Only 150 minutes is assessed work. Also, the selected-response count is "approximately 45," so don't memorize a fixed round number of items; prepare for roughly that scale, with five of them unscored field-test items you can't identify.

Unscheduled breaks do not stop the clock, so plan to use the scheduled 10-minute break. For a fuller picture of difficulty, see How Hard Is the NBCT Exam?

Scoring Math: The Numbers That Decide Certification

Certification is not a single cut score. All three criteria must be met:

  1. Component 1 unweighted average of at least 1.75
  2. Portfolio unweighted average of at least 1.75
  3. Total weighted scaled score of at least 110

How Component 1 Is Weighted

Component 1 contributes 40% of the overall weighted score. Inside Component 1, selected response is half and the three constructed responses together are the other half. That means the writing portion is not an afterthought: it carries as much weight as all of the multiple-choice work.

How Scores Are Reported

  • Selected response: raw scores convert to a 0-4.25 scale using unpublished conversion tables. No percent-correct threshold can be inferred, so ignore anyone quoting "you need X right."
  • Constructed responses: scored on four rubric levels with plus/minus gradations, normally 0.75-4.25, though zero is possible.
  • The 2.75 mark: it marks the beginning of accomplished-practice evidence. It is not a universal per-response pass mark.

Because the criteria interact, the details matter. Read NBCT Passing Score 2026 for the full breakdown, and use NBCT Pass Rate 2026 for how to read the issuer's published outcome data.

Read the pass-rate figures carefully: The issuer's February 2026 data reports 71% cumulative whole-credential certification since 2017 (over 33,890 of over 47,865 completed assessments, excluding 3,809 Not Scorable candidates). That figure spans all certificate areas and both initial and retake decisions. It is not an Early Childhood Generalist Component 1 pass rate, and the Get Started page still says 70%.

Selected-Response Domains 1-3

The selected-response section has three content headings. The approximate 30/35/35 weights apply only to selected-response items, not to all of Component 1 and not to the full credential. For a deeper walk-through, see the complete guide to all six content areas.

Domain 1: Child Development, Equity, Fairness, and Appreciation of Diversity (Standards I, III), approx. 30%

The developmental and equity foundation for ages 3-8.

  • Cognitive development
  • Language development
  • Moral and ethical development
  • Equity, fairness and diversity: relevant knowledge, skills and dispositions

Domain 2: Knowing and Integrating Subject Matter: Language and Literacy, Technology, Resources (Standards IV, VI), approx. 35%

Literacy content knowledge plus tools and materials.

  • Language and literacy: listening and speaking; writing
  • Technology
  • Learning materials and resources

Domain 3: Knowing and Integrating Subject Matter: Science, Social Studies, Arts, Health, Physical Education (Standard IV), approx. 35%

Breadth across the generalist's content areas.

  • Science
  • Social studies
  • Visual arts, music and drama
  • Health and physical education

Domain 3 punishes narrow preparation. A teacher strong in literacy and math who has not revisited science, social studies, arts, health and physical education at an early-childhood level will feel the gap. Remember that sample items illustrate format only; they don't define the full content or difficulty of the assessment.

Constructed-Response Exercises (Domains 4-6)

The six-domain structure in this site's outline is an output mapping: three selected-response content headings plus three constructed-response exercises. It is not an issuer claim of six weighted multiple-choice domains. Each exercise gets one prompt and 30 minutes.

Domain 4, Exercise 1: Supporting Reading Skills (Standards IV and VI)

You interpret student reading data by applying reading-content and pedagogical knowledge. The tasks, in rubric order:

  1. Identify and explain two reading strengths.
  2. Choose a developmentally appropriate learning goal and a research-based instructional strategy that builds on those strengths.
  3. Select an appropriate instructional resource or material.
  4. Justify the links among strengths, goal, strategy and material (the rationale).

Domain 5, Exercise 2: Analyzing Student Work in Mathematics (Standards IV and VI)

  1. Identify and illustrate a major misconception or error in the student's mathematics work, with an example.
  2. Identify the mathematical concepts and skills needed to solve the problem correctly.
  3. Describe a responsive instructional strategy, including relevant modelling resources or materials.
  4. Explain the rationale for that strategy.

Domain 6, Exercise 3: Children's Play (Standards I, VI and VIII)

You use knowledge of children's play and development to identify important developmental features and the teacher's role. The published example criteria ask you to:

  1. Describe two significant social/emotional aspects visible in dramatic play.
  2. Explain the implications for teaching.
  3. Describe two ways to extend cognitive development during play, with rationales.
  4. Support your points with evidence from the scenario.

Rubric Dimensions Across All Three Exercises

The rubrics cover 14 dimensions across four levels. This paraphrase shows how language shifts between Level 3 and Level 4 versus Level 2:

ExerciseOrdered criteriaLevel 3 vs Level 4 vs Level 2 signal
1: Supporting Reading SkillsTwo strengths; explanation; goal and strategy; resource; rationaleL4 accurate, detailed, thorough, research-based; L3 accurate and aligned; L2 vague, weakly aligned or overly broad goal
2: Analyzing Student Work in MathematicsMisconception with example; necessary concepts; strategy and materials; rationaleL4 complete, clear, substantive; L3 complete and effective; L2 simplistic, partial, trivial
3: Children's PlayTwo social/emotional aspects; instructional implications; two cognitive strategies; rationale; scenario examplesL4 insightful, thorough, explicit; L3 insightful and appropriate; L2 sketchy, mistaken, unclear

Key Takeaway

In each exercise, the rubric criteria appear in a fixed order that mirrors the prompt. Structure your written response to hit each criterion explicitly and in order; the rubric language rewards "explicit" and "logically aligned," while Level 2 language punishes "vague," "partial" and "weak alignment."

Eligibility Essentials

  • An accredited bachelor's degree and applicable valid state teaching licensure must be in place before registration or first purchase.
  • Three successful teaching years must be completed by June 30 of the third candidacy year, but you may start earlier. Qualifying employment is subject to licensure rules and stated exceptions.
  • Portfolios require access to at least six students, with at least 51% aged 3-8. Evidence is generally collected within 12 months before submission.
  • Attempt all four components within three years and achieve certification within five. Up to two retakes are allowed per component (or per Component 1 part).

The fuller eligibility picture lives in NBCT Requirements 2026.

The 2026-27 Calendar

  • Registration: June 1, 2026 through February 28, 2027
  • Component 1 testing window: March 1 through June 15, 2027

Scheduling details and deadline strategy are covered in NBCT Exam Dates 2026.

Test-Day Rules

  • ID: a nonexpired, accepted government photo ID matching your registration. Digital and/or physical IDs are mentioned in candidate materials, but the testing-room rules permit physical ID only. Bring the physical card.
  • NDA: required before testing begins (a 5-minute step).
  • Prohibited: personal notes, study materials and calculators. A supplied note board is allowed. Don't assume a scientific-calculator entitlement for Early Childhood Generalist.
  • Breaks: unscheduled breaks do not pause the timer.
  • Accommodations: require official approval in advance.
  • Arrival: 30 minutes early. A missed or late-canceled appointment triggers the USD 175 reauthorization fee.

The 2026 AI Policy: What You Can and Cannot Do

The issuer's March 2026 AI instructions for Component 1 are strict, and they shape how you should prepare.

AllowedProhibited
Standards summariesGenerating or rehearsing sample prompts, items or responses for Component 1 use
Concept clarificationUploading candidate responses or submissions for feedback, scoring or any other purpose
Reviewing official samples and rubrics yourselfSharing secure content or post-test notes
Self-assess without AI: Candidates are expected to review the official samples and rubrics and judge their own practice writing against them without AI help. Don't paste your Exercise 1-3 drafts into a chatbot for scoring, and be wary of any prep product that generates mock exams or grades your constructed responses. Revalidate the current policy before you start preparing.

A Domain-Ordered Prep Sequence

This is the one planning section in this article, tied to the structure above. For a fuller method, see the NBCT Study Guide 2026.

Weeks 1-2

Domain 3 breadth first

  • Refresh science, social studies, arts, and health/physical education at an ages 3-8 level, since this is where generalists have the most uneven coverage.
Weeks 3-4

Domain 1 and Domain 2

  • Cover cognitive, language and moral development, equity and diversity, then literacy (listening, speaking, writing), technology and materials.
Weeks 5-6

Exercises 1 and 2

  • Read the official rubrics, then practice 30-minute written responses against the ordered criteria for reading and math.
Week 7

Exercise 3 and timed run-through

  • Practice play-based reasoning, then simulate the full 60-minute selected-response plus three 30-minute writing sequence.

If you want timed multiple-choice repetition on the selected-response content, the NBCT practice test site offers independent knowledge practice, which sits alongside, not in place of, the official samples and rubrics.

After Certification: Maintenance of Certification

Once certified, the credential is maintained on a five-year cycle, and it is not a repeat of Component 1 or fixed-CEU renewal.

  • Maintenance of Certification (MOC) uses two portfolio components: a Professional Growth Experience with commentary/evidence, and a teaching video.
  • Cost is USD 495 plus USD 75 registration.
  • Complete it in the expiry year or the prior year to earn a five-year extension from the existing expiry date. Eligibility requires a valid certificate and a current unencumbered license, subject to official exceptions.
  • The advertised 60-hour preparation effort is a planning estimate, not a timer.

Maintenance outcomes (the issuer cites 99% among more than 26,770 complete MOC submissions since 2020, excluding 1,627 Not Scorable) should never be read as initial certification or Component 1 pass rates. For the career side, see Is the NBCT Certification Worth It? and the NBCT Salary Guide.

FAQ

How many questions are on the Early Childhood Generalist Component 1?

The manual specifies approximately 45 selected-response items, of which 40 are scored and five are interspersed field-test items, plus three constructed-response exercises with one prompt each. Don't rely on a fixed question count beyond "approximately 45."

How long do I actually have to answer?

Assessed work totals 150 minutes: 60 minutes for selected response and three 30-minute written exercises. The appointment itself runs about three hours because it also includes the NDA, tutorial and a 10-minute break.

Is a 2.75 the passing score on each written exercise?

No. A 2.75 marks the start of accomplished-practice evidence, but it is not a universal per-response pass mark. Certification depends on a Component 1 average of at least 1.75, a portfolio average of at least 1.75, and a total weighted scaled score of at least 110.

What does a Component 1 retake cost?

A retake is USD 125 per selected part. A missed or late-canceled appointment requires reauthorization at USD 175. You may retake each component, or each Component 1 part, up to two times.

Can I use AI to write and grade practice responses?

The issuer's March 2026 rules allow standards summaries and concept clarification, but prohibit generating or rehearsing sample prompts, items or responses for Component 1 use and uploading your responses for feedback or scoring. Review the official samples and rubrics and self-assess without AI.
